Most importantly, it’s funny – I’m not a one for ‘misery memoirs’ – and laughter is the best medicine etc. He tries to explain what your life is like when you essentially have a brain that's trying to kill you every day. He tries to explain what your life is like when you essentially have a brain that’s trying to kill you every day. I really went back and forth over whether or not it would be a good idea for me to read this book because I have had a lot of stuff to deal with over the last year. It is clear that as much as Joe delights most of us, he very rarely feels that way about himself, due to his diagnosis of BPD and his constant war with a mental health condition that is trying to kill him by getting him to kill himself.
Listening to real life as it has happened and is happening is living history and keeps us listening and wanting more, looking to the future with a hopefull smile. That being said, I can honestly say, that this is one of the most raw and honest books I have ever read. Can’t put it down, each paragraph starting its own internal thoughts which is gonna make this a long read. Such as recognising the important fact that our thoughts aren't our identity and that not everything our brain tell us is true. Final note to say is to say that the comedy in this book will have you laughing at things you thought were morally wrong to laugh at, but here you are belly laughing at suicidal jokes.
In the end I decided to go ahead and read it, with the understanding I could stop if it was too much for me and pick it up again whenever I felt I was ready. The thing that I think I liked most (if that’s that right word to use) is making people see that just because you’ve been fixed once, it’s okay to break against, it’s not a once fixed always fixed kind of illness. It had to be dragged into the world, with my condition telling me that every single word, sentence and chapter was terrible and would make strangers walk up to me in the street and punch me in the face. Excellently and honestly written this is a man on a mission and believe me hes enlightening people with this book. Toda noite ficava animada pra ler mais do livro e descobrir o que mais eu e o Joe tínhamos em comum. When people with BPD get a diagnosis, or don’t get a diagnosis, and read a book like this, it’s like going through a check list of everything about you no-one could ever see or imagine. No discussion of depression, suicide, or BPD would be uncomfortable for me because that’s my reality, much like the author’s. Evidently the lockdown experience embedded with his girlfriend's family has been somewhat revelatory. I’ll start by saying that this book is a very heavy read, and as Joe points out, if you’re not ready to read this book or easily triggered then please don’t read it. It doesn't just make an argument for honesty, it makes one for kindness and understanding (without ever taking them for granted).
I have an eerily similar brain to the author, so I loved this book and highlighted sections to an ungodly degree. Bravo Mr Tracini what a masterpiece you have created, thank you for letting us into your mind and life! His videos on his mental health are not silly joy and they are not captivatingly cringy, but they do manage to be serious, informative and funny. An extraordinary, heartbreaking and hilarious memoir from comedian, actor and mental health activist Joe Tracini, on how to live your life with a voice in your head that tells you to kill yourself every day. This book narrates little if any victory or miracles of insight or overcoming - which is, of course, the central challenge of life with BPD.But he does make it obvious they were more likely to take a pair of shears to pernicious weeds in the garden rather than dig them up by the roots. Incredibly, he emerges from the darkness with a timeless tale of love, hope and redemption that will be of immeasurable help to people facing the most destructive demons and, crucially, everyone who loves them. His message is that we don’t want yet another book which says: "my life used to be shit but now it’s great and you can do it too! He's starred in many TV shows including Hollyoaks, Coming of Age and The Great Outdoors, and he's the host of the BAFTA winning 'The Dengineers'. c!dal thoughts on a daily basis as opposed to the less nuanced, more reactionary portrayal and understanding of su!
I must have been on Mars when it first came out because I mop up books on BPD (being in the healing process myself, a long and arduous journey but well worth the ride,) but I'd never heard of this until it was mentioned on the BPD Bunch podcast. So I used to chat with Joe on social media long before the world knew his name and his love of leotards. In his new book, Joe continues the conversation in a bid to both raise awareness and stay accountable for his wellbeing. Part of my job is working with children who have suicidal ideation, self harm which affects their mental health.it's rare to hear bpd spoken about in such human terms - not medicalised, stigmatised, romanticised, or misrepresented.
