Founded in 1903, Letchworth became the first Garden City in the UK. The town is featured in the Domesday book along with the local villages of Norton and Willian.
In the centre of Letchworth is Plinston Hall, a venue popular for entertainment. There is also a cinema in the Broadway. Also located in the Broadway is the Broadway Hotel as well as the Letchworth Hall Hotel (Mercure). There is also an Arts centre which holds exhibitions and arts events.
The town has a wide range of sporting facilities including a Bowls, Hockey, Tennis and Cricket clubs and a Golf course. There are also local indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The Football ground in Letchworth provides the headquarters of the Hertfordshire football association.
There are two Museums in LGC, one housing archaeology collections and natural history and also the first Garden City Heritage Museum which specialises in the unique history of Letchworth Garden City.
